FAQ
Sugar In The Raw
What is SUGAR IN THE RAW Natural Turbinado Sugar?

SUGAR IN THE RAW is a natural Turbinado sugar made exclusively from sugarcane. Juice is extracted from the sugarcane and then crystallized through evaporation to maintain its natural molasses, golden colour and distinctive flavour. The resulting crystals are rinsed with a very small amount of water to remove just enough stickiness to make the product free-flowing. We pack this Turbinado sugar and market it under the SUGAR IN THE RAW brand name.

Why, if it's less refined, is SUGAR IN THE RAW Natural Turbinado Sugar more expensive than white sugar?

SUGAR IN THE RAW Natural Turbinado Sugar is a premium tropical Turbinado sugar made from natural cane. Worldwide, there are few growing and manufacturing facilities devoted to producing high quality Turbinado sugar, so the supply is much more limited than white sugar. As a result, SUGAR IN THE RAW Natural Turbinado Sugar costs more than white sugar.

How may I use SUGAR IN THE RAW Natural Turbinado Sugar?

Add it to your coffee, tea, cappuccino or latte. Sprinkle over cereal or fruit. Mix with cinnamon and sprinkle over pancakes, waffles or French toast. Use as a topping on muffins, cookies and other baked treats. Blend with fruit and skim milk or yogurt for a delicious smoothie. Use in glazes and sauces for meat and poultry.

Stevia In the Raw
What is STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener?

STEVIA IN THE RAW is a naturally sourced, zero calorie sweetener, which consists of steviol glycosides and a bulking agent (dextrose or maltodextrin).  The stevia is extracted from the sweetest part of the stevia plant leaf (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni).  It is then purified to create a sweetener that is 200 to 300 times sweeter than cane sugar. Because the stevia leaf extract is so pure and sweet, it requires blending with a bulking agent so that it can be conveniently measured, poured and used as a substitute for sugar or other caloric sweeteners.

In our packet product, the steviol glycosides are blended with dextrose, a naturally sourced carbohydrate derived from corn, to produce the zero calorie sweetener we call STEVIA IN THE RAW.

In our Baker’s Bag product, steviol glycosides are co-dried with maltodextrin, a naturally sourced carbohydrate derived from corn, to produce a naturally sourced, zero calorie sweetener that matches the sweetness and measurement of sugar “cup for cup” for recipes.

What are steviol glycosides?

Steviol glycosides are components that are extracted from the leaves of the plant Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni which are concentrated and purified.

What is dextrose and why is it added to STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener?

Dextrose is a naturally sourced carbohydrate derived from corn. Many sugar substitutes in powder form contain dextrose because it is a naturally sourced ingredient and does not change the flavour of the sweetener in the blend. In our packet product, dextrose is used to dilute the very potent steviol glycosides to make it measurable for consumers; dextrose does not alter the naturally sweet flavour of the steviol glycosides.

What is maltodextrin and why is it added to the STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag?

Maltodextrin, like dextrose, is a naturally sourced carbohydrate derived from corn. Many “cup-for-cup” and other sugar substitutes in powder form contain maltodextrin because it is a naturally sourced ingredient that does not change the flavour of the sweetener in the blend. In our Baker’s Bag product, maltodextrin is used to dilute the very potent steviol glycosides to make it measurable for consumers in “cup-for-cup” sweetening equivalency as a sugar replacement; it does not alter the naturally sweet flavour of the steviol glycosides.

Where is STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener from?

STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener gets its delicious sweetness from the stevia plant leaf.

How can I use STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener?

Add it to your coffee, tea, latte or any other beverage. One packet of STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener has the sweetness equivalence of two teaspoons of table sugar. Sprinkle it over cereal or fruit, like strawberries and blueberries. You can also blend STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener with fruit and skim milk or yogurt to make a delicious smoothie.  It’s also delicious in oatmeal, lemonade, and barbecue rub seasonings.

The STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag makes it easy to replace the sweetness of sugar with the sweetness of STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener by using the same measured volume. One cup of the STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag product is as sweet as one cup of sugar.

For best baking results, try one of our STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener recipes or adapt a favourite recipe by substituting half the amount of sugar with STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener. For example, if the recipe calls for a cup of sugar, use half a cup of sugar and half a cup of STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener.

In recipes for sweetened sauces and beverages, all the sugar can be replaced with STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener. STEVIA IN THE RAW Sweetener is heat stable, so it is perfect for use in cooking and baking.

How can the 275 g STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag product be measured “cup for cup” like white sugar?

The STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag product is equal to sugar in sweetness when measured by volume (such as in a measuring cup). One cup from the STEVIA IN THE RAW Baker’s Bag weighs a lot less than a cup of sugar. Less weight for you to carry and zero calories per serving — that’s a sweet deal!
